Research Topic

One way to study the principles of multisensory perception is by investigating illusions. In the ventriloquist effect, the speech produced by the ventriloquist is perceived at the location of the moving lips of the puppet. This effect is not exclusively linked to speech perception but occurs for non-speech stimuli as well, suggesting that visual input modulates the perceiced location of concurrently presented auditory input. A similar effect of touch on audition has been described, i.e. a tactile capture of auditory localization. Patrick will take a combined behavioural/event-related potential approach to answer the following questions: What is the neural basis of the non-speech ventriloquist effects, at which processing level do auditory, visual and tactile spatial representations interact and what are the limits of cross-modal learning in the developing and adult system?

 

Short Biography

Patrick completed his PhD at the Biological Psychology and Neuropsychology lab at the Department of Psychology at the University of Hamburg in 2010, where he currently works as a postdoc in the EU-funded project NOMS (Nano-Optical Mechanical Systems). He holds a Diploma with merit in Psychology from Ruhr-University Bochum. From 2004-2006 he worked as a student research assistant in the project "spatial perception and executive functions" at the Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors at the University of Dortmund (IfADo).
