Introduction to fundamental concepts of knowledge representation

Lecture 1: Basic concepts & ideas: Symbolic formats for representing knowledge, knowledge processing as manipulation of symbolic representations, problem solving as search in problem spaces, knowledge as core of intelligent behavior, production rules.

Lecture 2: Representation and reasoning: Propositional (in particular, logic-oriented) formats for representing knowledge, types of inferences, the interplay of syntax and semantics.

Lecture 3: Reasoning in understanding and acting: (1) Reasoning and perception, (2) Understanding external representations, e.g. language, graphics, (3) Reasoning, planning, acting: Planning and state sequences

Lecture 1: Basic concepts & ideas: Modes of language (Speech, written language), basic units of analysis (word – sentence – text), levels of linguistic analysis (phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics), the roles and interaction of lexicon and grammar, linguistic data: corpora, minimal-pair tests

Lecture 2: Syntax and Parsing: Grammatical categories and word forms, syntactic structure and formalisms describing the structures, phrases structure, agreement, generative grammars, dependency grammars, parsers and parsing

Lecture 3: Semantics and meaning representation: What is meaning (or how to describe it), meaning relations, meaning carrying units of natural language, compositionality (deriving meaning for larger units), tools to describe and construct meanings (logic, lambda-calculus), reference and co-reference

1. Lectures: (30 minutes each)Brain electrical activities and scalp Electroencephalogram (EEG), spike recording and information decoding of in vivo Neural Network, basic concepts of brain-computer interface

2. Lab work: (two hours each)

  • (1) Scalp EEG (A): Sensory evoked potential (steady- state visual evoked potential)
  • (2) Scalp EEG (B): Event-related potentials (motor imagery based ERD/ERS)
  • (3) Scalp EEG (C): P300 response
  • (4) Extra-cellular neuron spike recording

Goal

Oscillatory brain activity and synchronization phenomena have been observed in many experiments. The functional role attributed to them is being used to explain sensory processing and cognitive functions. This course will give an overview of current approaches to model oscillatory brain activity and insights gained from modeling studies.

Content

Neuron models (Hodgkin-Huxley, integrate-and-fire, mean-field approach, phase oscillators), mechanisms to synchronize neuronal activity, analytical results, numerical simulation of oscillatory networks, analysis methods for oscillator networks, current network models (synfire chains, cell assemblies), possible functional roles of neuronal synchronization, applications
